How to improve casting efficiency

Post by Blade on Thu Jan 12, 2012 3:56 pm

Hi guys!!

I know i haven't been on here for a while, but i would like to share this idea i got from someone.

I'm now able to cast about 2400 boolits in 4 hours time with this setup. I think i will let the pictures talk for themselves at first.

The one thing that i think we all hate about casting it that we have to wait for the lead to melt first. Also refilling the pot takes a while...

I have recently ordered a 20lb Lee pot with the thought that i will be able to cast a lot more... I still emptied it within about 30min with the 3 molds i'm using at the same time. In the past 2 years i've been using the 10lb pot and so i still put it to use.

What i've done was reversing the base plate on the 10lb pot and mounting it to a phew pieces of off cut wood and placing it on bricks just to give it some height. You're probably thinking "what happens when the 10lb pot starts dripping.... well, it does drip, but it doesn't drip high and it stays in the 20lb pot. Only when i fill up the 20lb pot with the 10lb pot. Only then it sometimes drips very fine pieces of lead outside the pot. I always wear gloves and jeans when casting, so it doesn't affect me at all. BUT i do stand up while pouring the lead into the 20lb pot. Just in case it drips into my face.

Also, the reason why i use 3 molds at the same time is, because all of us, sometimes have to wait for the sprue plate to cool down a bit. Otherwise it starts smearing the lead instead of cutting it off, which then starts "lifting up" the sprue plate, which cause a hell of a mess of your mold. I just use old aluminum baking pans to put the molds on, while i work with the others.

I hope this can be useful to some of you guys.

So that's what Reagan meant by "trickle down economics" Wink

Way cool! I do not cast bullets. But I can still see how clever that is. My hat is off to you.

Thank you guys.

I Know it looks a bit crappy and all that, but at least it took me about a hour to set that rig up. When i get around to it, i'll probarly make a better stand out of steel or something.

Hey that is a pretty good idea, because when we have our marathon casting sessions the one problem has been emptying the 20 lb pot and waiting for it to refill.

I think I have an unused 10 lb pot around here somewhere.
