Good powder for 223 plinking?

Post by hawcer on Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:47 am

I will be loading up a bunch of plinking ammo for the 223's...55gr fmj's. I really don't want to use up my Varget on plinking rounds as it is getting expensive. Any recommendations on a cheaper powder that will fit the bill? I'm thinking it could also do double duty in my 7.62x39's

R-7x,R-10x,Ramshot Tac,4895, ????

I will also have the VihtaVuori N135 I am pulling out of someone else's handloads I can use.

WC 844 Pull Down - (Cross reference loading data for H335) $85
WC 844T - Designed for use in M-856 Tracer $90
WC 846 - Cross reference loading data BLC-2 or WIN 748 $94
WC 846T - Designed for use in M-62 Tracer $90
WC 857 - For M-17 Tracer and M-20 APIT $69
IMR 4895 - (Same as Commercial 4895) Temp Out Of Stock
Long Range Match (use Reloader 15 data) $75
5010 - New Production (for 50 cal and other large capacity cases) $69
WC 860 - (FOR 50 CAL) From Israeli Pulldown. This is a ball powder $69
Shipping & HAZ-MAT extra. Up to 4-8 lb containers can be shipped with one $27.50 HAZ-MAT fee.

WC844 and WC846 if you can find it cheap enough would be my pick for 223 plinking going with what you have on hand ... TAC is pretty good but dont think I like varget any better I use both and both are superb ... What ever I can get cheapest.

Sold the 7mm and a former friend I used to reload 30-06 for can no longer shoot(not because he isn't able...because he's an idiot)

I cannot believe Varget is over $30 per pound around here now...It must have finally caught on at the range and everyone shooting long range matches must use it. I'll be going to Cabelas or something to get it, when I run out.

at that price an 8lb jug would pay for its self from Powder Valley. I have 16 pounds of Promo and Unique on its way cheaper than I could go to Cabelas and buy it that includes the Hazmat and shipping fees.

yep just checked powder valley 20.55 a lb 145. for 8lbs. only take 2 pounds to pay the hazmat fees

I best just bite the bullet and order bulk...the WC844 looks promising plinking stuff. I like the price you just posted too from powder valley Smile

Haven't experimented with many powders in the 223 yet but I like using H335.

How do you like the H335? How clean does it burn for you? H335 is pretty much the same thing as the WC844 surplus powder I might give a wirl.

Burns clean. That is the powder that I started out with for the 223's and have been satisfied with it.

I usually find TAC and W748 for $19 a pound. Around here Varget and most other powders average $24-25 a pound.

I love Tac when I had the 223 in ar platform. I use Tac currently in my 6.5 Grendel with outstanding accuracy.

I love TAC in 5.56 and 7.62 NATO loadings. I use a lot of Ram Shot Hunter and Zip in .22-250, .223 AI, and .240 Weatherby.

H1000, R19, and Retumbo are my go to powders for the stupidly overbore belted magnums like my 7mm STW.

When I can get it cheap I really like Accurate 2015 in the .223 AI, but only the bolt action. It does not burn as clean in the shorter barrels of the AR.

http://www.gibrass.com/gunpowder.html

Has some good prices on surplus powder as well and is a really great guy to deal with. I have called him several times with my CC and ordered powder. Bartlett ships up to six jugs with one HazMat fee.

I've been using some WC872 that I got from him in my .338-378 Weatherby shooting 300gr SMKs and it has been great so far.

Bartlett sells cheap WC844 as well, most of it pull down powder. I wish I had someone close to me that I could go in on a group buy of 6 jugs of WC844. That would be the ticket to get lots of cheap powder to plink with.
