I have the itch for another project (300Blk build) Finished pics!

Post by hawcer on Fri Jan 25, 2013 10:56 pm

I'm getting geared up for another project firearm...starting to do some homework, and need to decide on the caliber.

What caliber?

I've always had an interest in bolt action rifles chambered in pistol calibers...45acp most of all. easy to reload, not much recoil and the subsonic speeds leads nicely into the use of a sound suppressor. The draw back will be the custom magazine setup I'll have to come up with for the use on a rifle action.

I also would like to give the 300 Blackout a try some day, which also leads nicely into suppressor use.

The 450 Bushmaster round would also be awesome in a short carbine bolt action. Plus I already have all the gear to reload for this since I already have a 450B AR15 I built a couple years ago.

I would love a custom wildcat chambered in 450B, but necked down to 44(.429")...many more choices of magnum rated projectiles in that size than the .452"...but that's a pipe dream.

What action?

Normally I would do a build like this on a Savage action, for the ease in barrel swaps and I really like them anyway. But this time I am looking to go the Remington 700 route. Not because I truly like them, but because of the chassis system I plan on using with it. All I need is a complete action or donor rifle (short action). Since the barrel, stock, bottom plate, etc won't even be used, caliber specifics really only relies on the bolt face...308 size for 45acp or 450B, 223 size for 300 Blackout. Honestly, If I go with the 300 blk , I'd be better off buying the rifle factory chambered in 300 Blackout. Depending on who I find to chamber and thread the barrel for me...I'd like it to be threaded to be attached Like a Savage system barrel via a barrel nut. Time will tell.

I plan on using an Eliseo "Hunter" tubegun chassis system. It is easily the price of a nice rifle alone...but not everyone has one either.

It will be similar to this, but with a couple things a little different..mainly, it won't have the high dollar stock. But it can accept any AR15 stock I want to put on it.

I don't know what I'll get first...chassis or donor gun. I know where to get the chassis, but finding a donor gun for a price that isn't a complete rip off might take a little longer to find.

Just when you thought you had it hammered-down , let me toss another caliber at you ...
460-rowland cheers
Picture reaching out 200yds and having the same whoop-um of a 308 ...
185gn , .452dia , +1900fps ...
And the total cartage length is the same as a 45auto ...

I also found this chassis...about the same price, but a little different.

I like the 460 Rowland...But If I can get away from having to buy more reloading gear and components, I will.

I'm liking the 45acp idea. It also got me thinking about the magazine thing. What about a tube fed magazine.

If you have the dies to load 45acp , you can load 460rowland ... (all you need is the brass ,I get mine from Starline)
Just like you can use 357mag dies to load 38special ...

I'll look into the 460 then...I like the idea of being able to load multiple calibers with the same tools Smile

By chance is there any cartridge conversions out there to make your own 460 rowland cases? Like trimmed down 308 or 30-06?

Also...does the 460 require different bullets than the 45acp? By chance, if I initially have it chambered for 45acp. It seems like it should be possible to retouch the chamber with a 460 Rowland reamer to make it a 460 Rowland. Or do they require a different twist than the 45acp?

I just looked in my "the handloaders manual of cartridge conversions" 4th edition and it isn't listed.

I tried to do a copy paste , but every thing just scrambled

the casing is 1/16th longer than 45auto , so that you can't chamber it and over pressure your 1911 with 39,000cup ...
Also the web is thicker at the case-head/head-stamp ,to prevent bulging ...

Without watching the video or checking out the website posted, I would say that 30.06/308/270 brass would be a option for use. Although you would need to ream the inside of the case to reduce the thickness once it has been trimmed to length. I'm sure someone makes a cutter for this and if not one could be made relatively easy I would think.

Please be careful ,your jumping in waters that I haven't tested ...
I'v only done things after doing research ,and I'v never heard of using .308 casings for 45auto Evil or Very Mad

Making 45 acp brass out of 30.06 brass is about the easiest conversion I can think of besides converting 32 Winchester special into 30.30 brass
You should pick up a copy of the cartridge conversions manual, you will be pleasantly surprised with some of the conversions that are available. Personally I feel that every reloader that loads for more than 1 caliber should have a copy on there bench. You will soon learn that what you thought was a junk piece of brass (that's split, cracked or whatever) is very much useable in another caliber.

I did read somewhere after a short search that 30-06 brass is the best to use for converting to 460 Rowland...the case head is closer to that of the 460 then the 308 is. The thicker web in the rifle brass will handle the pressures of the 460, all it takes is a little reaming after trimming.

That being said...

I am seriously contemplating on parting out my 450 Bushmaster to cover the costs of this project(especially with the inflated prices going on)...so I might have the project in question chambered to 450B. It will be set up as a switch barrel, so future barrel swaps of different calibers will easily be accomplished. I'm just not sure if I want to jump off that bridge just yet...

As of now, I am looking at going with a factory barreled Remington 700. It will be cheaper up front and I can always re-barrel it at a later time.

I would prefer to get one chambered in 300 AAC blackout, but those are hard to find and the ones I do find for sale are really high priced.

Second option is the Remmy 700 308 AAC SD, it has a shorter 20" pre-threaded barrel for a can or muzzle break and the price is right at Bud guns. Plus the 308 bolt face will lead right into 45 caliber chamberings in the future.

Going this route will also give me a working rifle up front and i'll be able to play around with how I can modify magazines for shorter pistol cartridges.

Ohh....I 99% sure I'll be going with the MDT TAC21 chassis. I just haven't ordered it yet, because the magazines I order with it will depend on if I get the 300AAC or 308.

I pulled the trigger on the Tac21 chassis last night with 2 AICS 223 10 round mags.

Yep, that means I found a 300 AAC blackout Yehaw

Now I just have to decide on a stock and optics....and get a 300AAC die set.

Yep, 300 AAC Blackout on a remmy 700. The barrel is 16 1/2", 1-7 twist and pre-threaded for a comp/brake or Sound suppressor.

I'll also get to do some cartridge converting 5.56 to 300AAC Smile

Once I get the process down to an art, I'll have to do a write up or vid on converting 5.56/223 brass to 300AAC...I have a bunch of LC brass that will be prefect. I have a set of Hornady dies on the way.

I also have a bunch of 125gr spire tipped soft points I can use for fire forming the cases. That will be a fun day Very Happy

I have to stock up on some magnum powder...these call for W296, H110 or Lil gun. I have some Lil gun still left from the 44mag and 450B I loaded for....so I can get started right away.

Update on progress:

Ammo ready -- check
Nikon Prostaff BDC scope -- check
Weaver steel scope rings -- check
Tacstar grip -- check
Harris type bipod -- check
Tac21 Chassis (should arrive today) --check
2 - AICS 223 magazines (should arrive today) -- check
XLR industries tactical stock (should arrive today) -- check
Remington 700 300AAC donor rifle -- on it's way
Muzzle device -- still to be determined

I have to add:

... that the guys from MDT that make the Tac21 chassis are great to work with and I saved money ordering directly from them and bypassing Brownells.

This also goes for the guys at XLR industries.Great guys that know how to treat their customers They also make a real piece of artwork with their own chassis system. But I already had my mind made up on the chassis I wanted. But their tactical buttstock was exactly what I was looking for and in a price range that I could afford.

I would not hesitate to order anything from either one of those companies.

The rifle should be here today. if I can find the time to go pick it up, I'll have pics up tonight.

The magazines got backordered...so I am still waiting for them. I still have yet to decide on a muzzle device, so the factory thread protector is going to be it for now.

The scope rings I had ended up being too short. I found some that will work...not really what I had in mind, But actually they aren't half bad...They are Basspro's Redhead label and are designed to be peep throughs...but mounted up on this chassis, they look more skeletonized. This chassis really requires the use of AR type mounts/rings that are higher than the usual rifle rings. these are the same height as the M223 Nikon mount I was looking for but couldn't find in stock.

Sometimes you just have to sacrifice a little to keep a project moving along. Wink
