Don't laugh...

Post by RemMan700 on Mon Jan 10, 2011 12:31 am

Well I spent all day in rain, sleet, and snow soaked to the bone and freezing. When mini deer showed up I was all in. I guess this little doe will provide some tender meat. I used a 65gr sierra gameking and it worked perfectly.

Here is a pic of the winter weather we got her in Texas and a little cardinal that decided to come and eat some corn from the feeder.

Hunt hard, shoot straight, kill clean..........apologize to No one.

I'd love to have that doe in my freezer right now. Like Reload said, that's the best eatin deer you could have possibly shot right there. All those bigger deer are good for is burger and sausage.
You got "Fillet Mignon" right there!!:barri:

Great Job!

BTW- What caliber is that?

Congratulations on the sweet meat RemMan. Lean year for me this year also. Was trying to save a small 4-pt till next year but some of my neighbors cured that #$%#!!. My brother on the other hand got a 7-pt new years and an 8-pt yesterday. That's good though cause I get some of the sausage - - -

It was kinda tough for everybody around here that I talked to. Lots of guys who normally get deer every year were going home empty handed.
It was a really strange year for the timing of the rut and for deer sightings in general and it has only been since the late season started that I am actually seeing a few deer again.

So consider yourself very lucky to have any deer at all in your freezer cause I know quite a few that would love to have that doe in theirs........including myself!
All I got was the heavy 8pt. and he's all burger and sausage..........No steaks this year.......bummer. Neutral

eagle60- It's nice of your brother to share his harvest with you, that's what brothers do. Wink

That AR is just a basic .223 win. The deer went like 10yrds or less then went down.

There's alot to be said about a well placed bullet and those GK's have been killing deer for decades.

yup I will re-enforce what mo said..... strange year, here in Oklahoma as well.... not everyone got deer this year..... early rut warm weather.... must be global warming....hehehe

10 yards till she fell that is nice....now if I could figure out how to shoot them and they jump in back of truck to die.... that would be something....

Seeing that small deer brings back memories of a Black lab I used to have. She'd drag home about any animal that wasn't bigger than her. I had to bury a few small deer in the back field that she hunted down and killed. She was such a good hunter....possum,coon,rabbit,mink....you name it, they never had a chance. Even the neighbors frozen turkey they left out to thaw never made it to their table either.

I miss that dog....may she rest in piece...

Well I got my deer from the processor. It was only like 26lbs of meat but that more then half way filled the freezer of my 18cu. ft freezer.

That's not bad for a small doe, but it sure doesn't seem like you get nearly what you think you would out of a deer does it?
My buck was a pretty good sized deer body wize and after it was deboned I got 53lbs. of actual meat minus the tenderloins which I froze seperately.

On the hoof that buck probably went between 140-160lbs.

Yeah but it came down to be 26lbs of meat at $2.88 per pound from the processor. I guess you cant beat that price at the supermarket.

Not these days anyway, hell bologna is 4.99 per pound around here. I couldn't believe it when I saw it! That used to be the cheapest grub you could buy.
Deer meat taste a heck of alot better and it's better for you. The only wild game that is lower in fat and cholesterol is rabbit.
Thankfully I love both and I really enjoy going out and getting my "Own" groceries. Wink
The outdoors is my supermarket. Cool

If you process your own like I do you can get your protein for no more than the cost of a tag and a bullet, or an arrow/broadhead which is way more expensive than a bullet, but so much fun!

Yeah next year I am going to try to process the deer myself. I always enjoyed doing it in the past. To be honest it always makes me feel good when I open that freezer and see all the fish and game meat I was able to go out and provide for myself and family. Hopefully this week I will be able to go out and catch a bunch of trout that they are stocking in the small lake by my house. Those are usually super good and it is only a two minute drive to get there from my house.

I wish I lived closer cause I'd go with ya. I love to trout fish!
I didn't know the water was cold enough in Texas for trout?

I used to just catch and release them until I filleted some one time and deep fried them. To my surprise they were actually fairly tasty.
Not my favorite eating fish by any means, but not bad either. Especially in the dead of winter when any fish taste good.
I'll take crappie, bass, or catfish over anything else anyday, but trout will satisfy that fish craving when you gotta have it. Wink
And they are an absolute blast to catch.
