Well I did it

Post by brow_tines on Tue Feb 15, 2011 4:31 pm

I just reloaded my first rounds ever and shot the first 2, wow, you talking about getting your heart pumpin shooting your first reloads !!!!

9mm
125 grain cast boolits
3.8 grains Universal Clays
CCI small pistol primers

A question I do have, after I got done, I check all the OAL and out of the 10 it varied from 1.085 to 1.117. Is that anything to be concerned about ?

looking good. I dont know why you have so much variation not really a concern but you need to try to lock it down especially when you go for more accuracy. As long as they chamber it should be ok. I always check my loads with a OAL gage they are inexpensive and a quick check. You can also take the barrel out of your pistola and use it as a gage. cheers

congrats. shooting your first reloads is always an exciting yet scary thing.

a .03 variation isnt anything to worry about unless your already at max OAL. most of that variation is probably from inconsistent bullet tips (even though they are flat nose). you'll especially notice this is commercial rifle bullets and hollow points. thats why the ogive is a better place to measure from if your going for accuracy.

again, congrats

good job man, your hooked now !!!! ...maybe be easy on the roll crimp for a 9mm..since they headspace on the case mouth..i always use a taper crimp for 9mm ,.40 and .45...just my 2 cents.....bill

good eye....Bill is correct, you shouldn't roll crimp a 9mm.

Congratulations brow_tines! Be safe with it and you will have loads of fun (pun intended) Laughing I don't mind admitting that I have tied some of the older rifles to the bench and hid behind a tree with a long string to fire the first 2 or 10:) Good job dude.

Range report, I think I had to much rolled crimp and the bullets not seeded deep enough. And my old Ruger P89 doesn't like 125 grain bullets, I had a few "key holes"

At least you are learning....keep trying, it will come together.

Try a light taper crimp as opposed to the roll crimp.....too much crimp will resize your bullet enough to cause other concerns....so go easy. just to the point where the cartridge will fall in and out of the barrel chamber with little resistance.

Very nice work. I agree that a taper crimp die is the way to go with semi-auto. I’ve found the 9x19mm to be a very constant and forgiving cartridge to reload. I was wondering what press you were using? I use a turret type and my OAL tends to flocculate slightly. +or- 0.004
