Shotgun primers

Post by hawcer on Mon Mar 21, 2011 1:06 pm

I have a question...

I was messing around with my Lee load-all shotgun press and decapped a couple shells. I must of never payed attention to 209 primers before....it looked like a large rifle or pistol primer inserted in the 209 primer body....so I punched it out. Except for the anvil, the prime looks and measures out to the same size as a large pistol primer.

Is it possible to re-prime 209 primers with large rifle are pistol primers?

Talk about using your noggin!! Never thought of that myself Hawcer. I wonder how much hotter the different Primers are? Wonder how much more pressures one would have over the other?

Questions that obviously does not have an answer for LOL....

Boy, you really got me stumped on that one. I've honestly never took one apart to look inside, maybe I should?

I know that they are plenty hot enough to ignite black powder in smoke poles, and it takes quite a bit of heat if not more so to accomplish that versus the amount that it takes to jump a fraction of an inch to ignite smokeless powder inside a cartridge case.
