Sorry to build you up for a let down.... Wait, your a married man just like me so you understand right? hahahah, sorry...

They do work great. If Bill reads this he can chime in. I would like to get the deminsions of his dies to see what I can do on the lathe. Right now, I have to get this one project out of the way before I start another.... Just have to quit snapping belts.....

There is actually a 410 shot cup inside the 45 shotshell case. You drop the powder, then sit the 410 shot cup on the powder and then fill the shot cup with the amount of shot you want to use.

Back in veitnam, when this method was first used, Pilots were given these shotshells in a brown paper bag. If they ever had to eject or was shot down and survived, they would have these shotshell to hunt for food without using their regular rounds. IIRC, they used a cut down 308 shell, a bottle neck is formed, then powder, 410 shotcup, shot and then a 35 caliber gas check was placed in the mouth cup down and crimped into place. It worked the slide flawlessly with a good pattern.

I learned about this in the edition of ABC's of Reloading that I have...... Thought I might share.....

Too bad something like a 357 sig that already has a bottleneck isn't big enough to fit in the 45 lol...,.

Sorry for the delay in response, check out this web page for info on the .45 ACP shotshell;

http://www.icehouse.net/fgrig/gun/shot.htm

Seems to be a fairly easy method of loading with some work - if you do not mind the labor.

I wonder if you could use .45 Super, .45 Win Mag or .451 Detonics brass cut back to .45 ACP OAL instead of 7.62 NATO?

Trimming 7.62 NATO to .45 Win Mag is a cheap way for me to get brass for that caliber. Dies were a bit pricey, but they have saved me some money in the long run as I can get 7.62 NATO for free most of the time if I time my days at the range correctly.

For some reason that baffles me, the Reservist Squids do not collect their brass, and they leave all that lovely LC brass at the range for us vultures. Regrettably some dirt bag let the secret out and now there is usually a few us there to collect the brass when the Squids shoot to qualify.

I have been tempted to load the .45 ACP shot shell with a tad more powder, a bit more shot in the .45 Win Mag just to see what it would do on pesty jack rabbits.

We have no poisonous snakes here like you boys in the south, so most of my shotshell shooting is at either grouse or vermin.

I have a .357 T/C Hotshot barrel that I should be getting back from my gun smith soon with a special brake added to it. When it gets back to me I will post some pics on the forum.

Within about 25' the old long Hotshot T/C rounds are a blast - my favorite being 9 gr of Bullseye, under a T/C blue #4 shotshells with a light crimp. RCBS used to make a die specifically to load these old long T/C Hotshot cartridges but since T/C dropped the product - RCBS followed suit.

If you haunt the auction sites like Evilbay, GB, and Guns America people are offering the old T/C Hotshot capsules either as loaded ammo or reload components. Prices are near $25 per box but they work awsome on rodentia within 25 feet.

In my T/C .357 10" Hotshot barrel, with the choke installed using either #9, #6 or my favorite #4s, it kills grouse, and jack rabbits near on the spot without obliterating the critter like some of the other rounds.

I love shooting the shotshells and I will regret the day that the sources of the T/C Hotshot components drys up. T/C did not make a .45 version, to my regret but I have been wanting shotshells in my .45 Win Mag for some time now.

This topic caused me to look for some .45 shotshell loads and what do you know I might have something new to toy with on the bench.

None of the material I have says anything about using a .400 Corbon die which I do not believe was around when these .45 ACP shotshells were first designed.

Maybe this will give me an excuse to buy a .400 Corbon barrel for my Colt Series 80 Gold Cup NM 1911 with the dies! I have always wanted a .400 Corbon anyway.

I could be wrong as I have yet to load any of these in either .45 ACP or .45 Win Mag & I cannot speak from experience - yet.

I believe using my taper crimp die I should be able to crimp the 35 cal gas check on top of the .45 ACP & .45 Win Mag shell forming a nice tight seal.

I have some aluminum 35 cal .010 gas checks coming from a seller on Evilbay to try when I load some of these in .45 ACP and .45 Win Mag.

Since I shoot and reload for an ancient SxS .410, I have plenty of .410 shot cups around and do not mind sacrificing some to experimentation.

I have been wondering about ordering the .45 Win Mag RCBS case forming die set. By using 7.62 NATO to form the brass, I wonder if the cases can handle more than the 40,000 limit listed in the books for .45 Win Mag?

RCBS also includes a reamer to remove case material from the sides but none of the .45 ACP shotshell reloading instructions I have seen suggest reaming the brass to reduce case wall thickness.

According to the reading material, ABC's of Reloading, they say the reason for the 308 brass, or the 7mm-08 that Bill used, was due to the fact they said the 45 acp brass was too thin for this application. I am reading more. I will try to get the wife to scan this into the computer, convert to pdf and upload for all to read along...

Thanks DW sounds good - I look forward to reading the info.

You mention .45 ACP as too thin that is why I was wondering on if I could use .45 Super or .45 Win Mag brass as both are much thicker to handle the higher pressures of these cartridges.

Most .45 Win Mag for semi-autos tops out at about 40,000 which is about 11,000 higher than most .45 ACPs are designed for.

Since I shoot a single shot break action T/C Contender in .45 Win Mag I can load higher creeping on the .454 Casull.

I do not have a .45/410 barrel in my collection (yet) as the budget does not really have the funds for me to purchase one in the near future.

So I am looking at loading some of these shotshells for barrels & guns I already own, rather than buy another at this point - and end up sleeping on the couch again with the dog.

When I fish on the eastern (dry) side of my state walking along the coulees and washes cast-fishing for smallmouth bass, I see lots of running jack rabbits which are a pest.

While quick drawing from the hip and shooting a running jack rabbit with a .45 ACP hard ball is fun, using a shotshell I think would increase my lethality. Its also good practice at reflex shooting.

[url=[/url].....i found these pics of the .45 shotshell i make... the reason you need the .308,.243,270...etc is you cut them longer than a .45 case is... then neck down the part that extends out past the end of a normal case... for more shot volume...hope this helps....bill also if u do it this way the instructions i found says to not use military brass for the cases..they are harder and could break your extractor ...when you fire them the end flares out onto the lands and groves or the barrel if loaded too hot cases will grab the lands and extractor cant pull the case...so it will pull thru the end of case...if military cases are used extractor cant pull thru and will break.......im just repeating what i read.....bill

It looks like you could get away with using a 400 corbon sizing die to form the ogive in the case walls and crimp the gas check into place...as long as the die is set shallow so it doesn't start to form the neck.

possibly even a 308 sizing die that has had the bottom portion trimmed off so the case can reach the area of the die that sizes the shoulder.

Just a thought...
