SKS

Post by Rick459 on Sun May 08, 2011 10:50 pm

the SKS on the left is a Yugo. on the Right is a Russian. notice that the Yugo barrel is a little longer than the Russian. both are wearing the new Shernic Bull-Pup stock. makes them more fun to shoot.

You should have bought one about 25 years ago Dart.

I paid $75 for my ChiComm-surplus SKS. I had to fish in a barrel full of SKS packed in cosmoline. Once I picked one I had to pry it from the barrel filled with cosmoline and then take the nasty thing home.

When you are carrying a cosmoline soaked dripping mess, people tend to avoid you at the gun shows.

I got my little SKS home and found it had never been shot and was made just after the Vietnam War. Still got the spike bayonet, and I put a little short scope on the back but otherwise it is stock.

Great little gun, my dad, father-in-law and uncles tell me the Viet Cong were very fond of the SKS and used them for sniper weapons early in the war until they could get better rifles.

My wife is only 5' tall so the little SKS fits her well with its short stock but it is a little short for me.

I would recommend getting some spare parts as the parts are becoming scarce, and the a-holes in DC keep threatening to ban the SKS as it is a "naughty weapon."

Our little SKS has been abused a bit as we have fed it all kinds of corrosive cheap steel-cased crap ammo that we buy by the flat at the gun shows.

We still have a bunch of Bulgarian late-70s corrosive ammo. The little SKS eats just about anything we stuff into it. We did have some Egyptian ammo it hated but that was because the ammo was crap not the rifle.

I have shot some of that new Hornady 123gr V-Max steel cased load and it works quite well. Cabela's here sells it cheaper than I can load it, but they will not sell me a flat of it. Evil or Very Mad

I hit a few marmot with that Hornady load last summer and it does well, but my 22-250 AI seemed to kill the marmot quicker.

I love the SKS - only mistake I made is I should have bought two or three. In 1985 I never imagined that prices for them would get so stupid.

df75,
we got in on the stock buy when Shernic was just starting out. we waited over a year for them but they were well worth the wait. we got in at the time what was called the pre-productin sales. so the special at that time was $119.00 for each stock plus they threw in the tri-rail and the extended mag release. now i think they sell for $229.00. alot of people over at the sks suviorior website thought they were a scam. but after me and my girlfriend went to see the proto-type and met the owners at the Glendale gun show it didn't seem likely. well worth the wait.

I was this close --><-- to getting in on the pre-production discount. I loved the idea and even sent along a few of my own ideas to them. I just couldn't get myself to dump the cash into one until someone actually received one.

I gave my SKS to my brother....So it makes no difference anymore. I'm glad you were able to get in on the deal and it looks like it turned out very nice for you.

Reckon where a fellow could find a hammer for one of the Chi-Com SKS's? Youth, ingorance and too many dry fires got the best of mine and so far, I've found just about everything except a hammer. Nice little gun too. Found it for 98 bucks at a pawn shop still sporting the cosmoline. It was tough on the armadillos Smile

Most places I know of are out of SKS hammers. Grab one (or several) when you find someone with some.

These guys have the schematics for a machinist to make one:

If you have a friend with a machine shop might be able to get a few made.
