RCBS RN 225 grain Casts

Post by Daywalker on Tue May 24, 2011 12:58 pm

Got a few things going on, so I figured to clear my head and take a seat back for a moment, I would try out a new to me mould that I got on a trade. It is the RCBS 225 grain RN mould. Casted up 540 with what lead ingots I had left. I really need to do some smelting, but time restraints and bad weather prevents me from doing so. I have alot I need to get done. At any rate, figured I would post a couple pics from the fruits of my labor....

Man, do those look sweet!

Look as smooth as a babies butt....

What mold did you use? Are those for a 45LC or a totally different caliber? I suppose you are gonna use them in your 45acp?

Nevermind on the mold type, I see the title now...I'm a dumbass,LOL

Thanks guys. I can't wait till I get some time to make it back out to the range. At this point, not sure when that is going to be. I am just trying to cast up what I can to store up on. The mould does really well. I am also using a new pot, the Lee 20 pound production pot. Using the number 5 setting, my boolits aren't frosting as they use to with the 10 pound pot. Keeping the mould warm enough for great fill out is working as well. I wear welding gloves and open the sprue plate by hand, and at the temp that I am keeping them, it is just warm enough to open the sprue with a little resistance.

I do need to work on the cavities a little bit. I have taken a dowl and rubbed the cavities trying to break off any burrs. I still have them sticking to the point that I have to use a wooden mallet to smack the bolt on the handles to force them to drop. Next I am going to place a bolt over each cavity with sprue plate open, cast through the bolts and a little over top. Then I am going to coat the boolits with toothpaste and place them back in their cavities and use a wrench to turn the bolts to try to smooth it that way.

We will see....
